Brian Wilson @ Casino de Paris, Sept 20 2011

Brian Wilson @ Casino de Paris, Sept 20 2011

Girl of Paris (far left), Brian Wilson réimagine Gershwin à Paris

Brian Wilson is back in Paris after playing Le Grand Rex in 2007, I can' t believe it's already 4 years.
This time he's playing Gershwin songs from his recent album.
Almost the Same band as for the last 10 years ( new drummer and bass player and the beautiful Taylor Mills is missing ) more than 10 musicians on stage with some extra French musicians including a sexy girl on cello.
Needless to tell you that these guys are playing perfectly specially the vocal harmonies which are faultless.
Merchandising

Brian Wilson in center stage seating behind a keyboard that he will rarely play and reading his lyrics on the screen, i'm also pretty sure that his intros and chat between songs are also written down.
Brian still has a good voice even though he's not singing the high harmonies and leaves it to Jeffrey or Darian who are both singing lead vocals on a song each.

Ist part of the show is The Gershwin album from the first song to the last.
This part is pretty average, songs are played Brain Wilson style not for the best, there's something lacking. It's not swinging as it should be.

The second part is a Beach Boys best of... and it's rocking even if the audience is still comfortably seating down.
The musicians have to ask them to stand up and dance...finally !
Funny to see Brian, he sometimes looks like a big bear lost in the middle of all this but he always has been acting funny at all the shows we've been to these last few years, probably 15 in all, most of them at the Royal Festival Hall in London.

So... average first part and very good second part.
Brian Wilson's setlist @ Casino de Paris

1st Part with Gershwin songs, the album in its entirety and in order :
1) Rhapsody in blue (intro) 2) The like in I love you 3) Summertime 4) I loves you, Porgy 5) I got Plenty o' nutting 6) It ain't necessarily so 7) 's Wonderful 8) They can't take that away from me 9) Love is here to stay 10) I've got a crush on you 11) I got rhythm 12) Someone to watch over me 13) Nothing but love 14) Rhapsody in Blue (reprise)

Sorry no video for this show, the security was a pain in the ass.
We've found one here's "Surfin' USA":

Neal Casal + H-Burns @ West Country Girl, Paris Sept 19 2011

H-Burns (left) Neal (far right)

After eating at a nice Lebanese restaurant with Cécile Peel & Miss Flower we went to the nearby crèperie West Country Girl where they are organising lots of concerts.
Tonight it's a small show with French singer H-Burns on acoustic guitar for a few songs before "headliner" Neal Casal.
The place is quite small, everyone knows each-other so it's a gig between friends, 30 people in all.
Neal is playing a few laid-back tunes in front of a very dedicated audience.
Cool set.

Hubert Felix Thiéfaine @ OUIFM, Paris Sept 15 2011

French singer Hubert Félix Thiéfaine is playing a small concert live on the air, 8 songs set in the lobby of OUI FM radio in Bastille, in front of less than a 100 people.
This rock singer is rarely play on the radio and ignored by the media but he has dedicated fans so his albums and tours are always a commercial success.
Probably one of the most interesting French singer, one of the few who's not playing crap music. Great songs and great lyrics, favorite song of this 45 min set was 3rd song "Petit Matin..." and the latest single (Here on video).

Peter Doherty @ We love Green Festival - Parc de Bagatelle, Paris Sept 11 2011

Peter Doherty
@ We Love Green Festival @
Parc de Bagatelle in Paris' Bois de Boulogne, Sept 11 2011
Rehearsals before Metronomy's gig in his dressing rooms

Great location for this festival: Parc de Bagatelle in Paris' Bois de Boulogne.
5000 capacity, 70 % posh female audience in their late teens-early 20's.
It stopped raining as the first artist SOKO hit the stage, then we had sunshine & Piers Faccini, Selah Sue & Metronomy.

As we were hanging out in the backstage area before Metronomy played their set, we saw that Peter was already there, a first as he's usually getting on site at the last minute and that he was playing guitar in front of his dressing room (see pics above).
He played "Delivery" in his dressing room and Patrice, our photographer, could manage to video-record it so here it is. Enjoy !

Peter Doherty is headlining tonight, it was baking all day long but now it's freezing.
Peter "Colourful" Doherty

We've seen him so many times these last few years that it's hard to remember every gig we've been to. He played 8 gigs in Paris just last year (we've missed two of them).
With Peter , you never know what to expect from great to pathetic when he's fucked up on drinks and drugs like his show @ Le Tigre club in March which was the most horrible we probably ever attented.
Tonight Peter is on "top" form even though it seems to be on autopilot, songs are played one after another. A bit of chat between songs.
Peter with guest Soko on two songs

We are treated with a Best of setlist: songs from the Libertines, Babyshambles and from his solo record.
Setlist included : Arcady, Albion, Fuck forever, can't stand me now, Twist and shout, Back from the dead, delivery, you talk... and some others (not in order)
Soko who opened the festival this afternoon is watching him from the wings of the stage and is guest on vocals on "Can't stand me now" (here on video) and on harmonica on another one.
The audience is quite calm and respectful, they don't throw shit on stage (cigarettes, books...) like they used to a couple of years ago when it was all just a circus with lots of tension in the air to every of his gig.
People are simply enjoying the gig, Peter is now an artist like anybody else.
Is it good or bad ? we don't know.
The only thing we know is that he did a good gig.
Maybe it's time to do another album as a solo artist or with Babyshambles because even if we like the old songs, he's playing the same shit over and over for the last few years, we'd like to listen to something new.

Too bad there wasn't any Encore, as he played a great gig.

Peter has left the building (far right)

Here's an interview he did after the show.
